This closeup landscape represents a bit of Atlantic lowland rainforest in Costa Rica. The painting is based on the artist's on-site photographs at La Selva Tropical Research Station and personal knowledge from travel, work as professional tour guide, geographic research as a graduate student in Panama and work as biological research assistant and scientific illustrator at Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. The challenge of painting such a species rich environment the imposition of artistic order while keeping a feel of the immense complexity. The large turkey-like birds foraging on fallen fruit are great currasows, male (black) and female (brown).
